I nterest has increased throughout the oil and gas industry regarding fixed installation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and flammable gas indicators as supplemental protection for personnel and facilities. Consistent with this interest is a need for better understanding of the function and limitations of such equipment, especially when evaluating its application to specific operations. The first priority should be to control the release by isolating it. Scheduled testing/inspection of equipment, preventive maintenance, regular maintenance and adherence to effective operating procedures and practices have top priority in reducing the frequency of releases. When these measures are in place, the need for fixed H2S and flammable gas detection can then be evaluated.
